The City of Yes is a major new intiative and reform to New York City’s zoning laws. There are three major area initiatives to this proposal: Housing Opportunity, Economic Opportunity, and Carbon Neutrality.
Key takeaways:
- Can build more affordable housing in medium and high-density districts
- Approve the building of Acessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) – garage and basement apartments, and in one and two-family homes in all low-density districts
- Eliminate parking space mandates for new housing construction
- Remove outdated restriction on where businesses can open, operate and expand
- Remove existing zoning obstacles that severely limit how much space on a rooftop can be covered by solar panels
- Facilitate electric vehicle charging in public garages and other places where it is needed. (yay!!! we need more charging stations.)
